Topography
The eastern half
of the ranch consists primarily of broad open mesas with flat to gently
rolling topography. This is the summer range with elevations from 4,200
to 5,600 ft. The western area is hilly to mountainous. This is the winter
range with elevations from 2,000 to 4,600 ft. Please see the elevation
map above or click here for a large version of
this map.
Precipitation
Average annual precipitation
varies with elevation, from approximately 9.4 inches in the desert in
the southwestern corner to 17 inches on the majority of the winter range
at 3,500 to 4,000 feet, to 20 inches in the eastern mesa country. Please
see the elevation map above or click here for
a large version of this map.
Forage
Dominant perennial
grasses include tobosa, curly mesquite, various grammas, galleta, and
three awns. Browses consist of mesquite, catclaw, jojoba, mountain mahogany,
cliffrose, oakbrush, and winterfat. Annuals include alfileria, Indian
wheat, squirrel tail, sixweeks grama, and numerous forbes and weeds..
Carrying
Capacity
1,232
Animal Units (yearlong). The variation in elevation, topography, and
forage provides an excellent balance of summer and winter range. Present
management includes winter supplement for the bull herd, but the variety
of grasses and browse is such that winter supplement for the cow herd
is generally not necessary.
